Time Sensitive Information from the Director

Greetings to you and your family from the Financial Aid Office at the University of Northwestern Ohio! It is now the right time to begin thinking about getting ready to obtain funds for the 2017-2018 FAFSA year as soon as possible after October 1, 2016.

Students continuing or starting after May 2017 in the College of Applied Technologies, College of Business, College of Occupational Professions, College of Health professions, or Graduate College must complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA application.

Since most income tax returns for 2015 have been completed and submitted to the IRS it is both helpful and practical to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now.

Much of the information your family will be supplying to the IRS via the 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ tax return is applicable in the preparation of your 2017-2018 FAFSA. A FAFSA on the Web Worksheet is very helpful to complete in order to prepare for the online application. It is important to note that the University of Northwestern Ohio's priority filing deadline for the receipt of the FAFSA is April 1, 2017.

It is also advisable to obtain an IRS Tax Transcript of both your tax return and your parents if you are a dependent student. It may be necessary if you are selected for verification by the US Department of Education, to submit the Tax Transcripts to the University. IRS Tax Transcripts can be obtained by calling 1-800-908-9946 or go to www.irs.gov/transcript to order or print a copy.

You (and at least one parent if you are dependent) will also need the U.S. Department of Education FSA User ID to complete and make corrections to both your FAFSA as well as applying for Federal Loans. You and your parents may obtain a FSA User ID by creating one at www.fafsa.ed.gov or https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.

Please be sure to use information that is as accurate as possible. The 2015 income tax information can also be transferred from the IRS to your FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Using this process could reduce your additional required follow-up paperwork for the verification process. The IRS Retrieval Tool is available on the FAFSA application. The University will send both an email and a post card telling you when the Award Notice will be available online at my.unoh.edu. The Award Letter can then be viewed by following the instructions on the postcard or in the email.

Please note, that the 2017/2018 FAFSA will be available to complete as early as October 1, 2016. You can complete your 2017/2018 Renewal FAFSA by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov this Fall which will determine your financial aid eligibility beginning June Session 2017 or Summer Quarter 2017.
